Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
What is Set Aside?
Set Aside is a special space within Greenlawdean Farm, a 700-acre organic farm in the Scottish Borders. We've created opened the farm so that people can escape their busy lives, reconnect with nature, and find peace in beautiful surroundings. We have also created a membership model so that people can teach, learn and heal on the land.
Why is it called 'Set Aside'?
The name reflects our philosophy of setting aside this special area of the farm as a place for people to step away from everyday life, reconnect with nature, and experience the healing benefits of the countryside. Just as the land is set aside to regenerate, we hope visitors will find space to renew themselves too.
Can I bring my friends to share the space at Set Aside?
Yes, we welcome small groups of people. We just ask that you let us know what you are hoping to do and when.
What's the best time of year to visit?
Each season offers something unique at Set Aside. Spring brings new life and abundant wildlife, summer offers long days perfect for outdoor activities, autumn showcases spectacular colours across the farm, and winter provides peaceful solitude and starry nights. Our huts are designed for year-round comfort with wood-burning stoves for the colder months.

How does the membership system work?
We offer three types of membership:
- **Skill-sharing Membership**: For those who want to use Set Aside to teach classes and workshops

- **Healing Membership**: A special free membership for charities and individuals in need
Do I need to be a member to visit?
While members receive priority booking and other benefits, we do welcome non-members for specific events. However, you will need to be a member to book a hut or to use our facilities.
How do I become a member?
You can join through our website or contact us directly. We're happy to discuss which membership type might best suit your needs.
Accommodation
What kind of accommodation do you offer?
We have three self-contained, off-grid comfortable huts. Each offers a genuine off-grid experience while providing essential comforts.
What facilities do the huts have?
Each hut includes:
- Solar-powered lighting
- Wood-burning stove for heating
- Basic kitchen facilities and utensils with crockery, pots and pans
- Composting toilet
- Comfortable sleeping areas
- Essential supplies
All this comes with stunning views and peaceful surroundings.
Is there running water and electricity?
Our huts are intentionally off-grid to offer an authentic rural experience. We provide plenty of fresh water for your stay, and there's solar power for basic lighting. Part of the charm is disconnecting from modern conveniences while still being comfortable. The HQ caravan has a connected shower and plumbed in toilet that you are free to use during your stay.
Are the huts warm enough in winter?
Yes! The wood-burning stoves are remarkably efficient at heating these well-insulated spaces. We provide plenty of seasoned firewood and clear instructions for those new to using wood stoves.
Can I choose where my hut is located?
Yes, depending on availability. We have 3 huts, each offering different views and experiences—from woodland settings to open hillside vistas with spectacular views.
Can I camp?
Yes, there is a small enclosure available for ‘wild camping’ but you will have full use of the facilities at the HQ caravan for showering.
